Three topics are discussed in this paper.(1)Concept and general characteristics of transfer zones in fold thrust zones.A transfer zone can be defined as an accommodation structure resulting from conservation of regional shortening strain during compressional deformation.It can be divided into two types:vertical and lateral transfer zones.Segmentation of fold thrust is realized by lateral transfer zone with the pattern of strike slip fault.(2)Concept and general characteristics of transfer zones in extensional tectonics.A transfer zone in a rift system can be defined as an accommodation structure resulting from conservation of regional extensional strain.It can also be divided into vertical and lateral transfer zones.Segmentation of rift system is realized by lateral transfer zone with the pattern of lateral uplift.(3)Function of transfer zones in development of sand bodies in sedimentary basins.Distribution of sand bodies is closely related with transfer zones.Sand bodies of alluvial fan

fan delta and turbidite fan can successively develop in the steep slope and in the center of lake basins that are corresponding to topographic lows and associated drainages controlled by lateral transfer zones.
