Abstract:

The suture zone between the south and north China Plates has long been disputed. One of the main arguments is which plate should the area between the south of Queshan-Feizhong fault and the north of Xinyang-Shucheng fault belong to. We have discovered Heliolites cf. anhuiensis, panderodus gracilis, Kirkbyella sp. and other fossils in the carbonate gravels of the bottom conglomerate of the Yangshan Formation in Shangcheng County,Henan Province. These fossils belong to the Early Paleozoic, and most likely to the Silurian. In the mean time, Protomonocarina sp. was found in the Huyuofang Formation near Feng-huang Primary School, Shangcheng County. The above Conchostraca fossils of the Middle Carboniferous were only found in the Benxi Formation, Kaiping Basin in North China. It shows clearly that the Late Paleozoic sediments in north Huaiyang are intimately tied up with the Carboniferous system in North China Plate. We have reason to consider that north Huaiyang and North China Plat-form were linked as a whole at least in the Carboniferous Period. Based on (1)Xinyang-Shucheng fault has the nature of ductile shearing:(2) A series of overthrust nappes thrust northward; (3) Ophiolite zoneand tectonic melanges are distributed along the fault; (4) 3T-type polysilicic muscovite and C-type eclogite discovered in Luoshan-Xinxian section of the fault are produced in low temperature-high pressure environments; (5) The fault was a sudden change zone in geophysic fields; (6) Paleogeomagnetic measurement shows that the paleolatitude of the sampling point in the Meishan Group was 25-28癗, and that of the sampling point of the Fuziling Groupwas 1-5癗. This indicates that there might have been a drifting process for the two groups in geological history. We thus consider that Xinyang-Shucheng fault is a geosuture line of the Daibie suture zone in north Huiyang. Therefore, hydrocarbon exploration range in the North China Platform may cross over Queshan-Feizhong fault, and may even extend to Xinyang-Shucheng fault.Whereas the coal-bearing formation of frontal depression in north Huiyang region is significant for coal-formed oil and gas.
