In this paper,a systematical description of tectonic attributes and history of evolution of the western Ordos margin is made from the viewpoint of plate tectonics. It is considered that the margin evolved from pre-Caledonian aulacogen through post-Caledonian aulacogen, via Mesozoic front depression to Cenozoic graben. An relative account of tectonic patterns, sedimentary characteristics, transgressive direction, magmatic activities and stress action of defferent times are given. The authors point out that the development mechanism of the above structures depends mainly on long-term convergence of north Qilian geosyncline and the adjacent Alashan block as well as dextral shearing of BaojiQingtongxia deep fault. The present area is characterized by sediments of huge thickness which formed a good few sedimentary cycles favourable to oil generation and preservation. Oil prospects of this area could not be underestimated though intensive reformation has later occurred in this area. The authors suggested that the hinge zone lying in between the area studied and Ordos platform,i. e.,the thrustclad area, should be promissing for oil and gas, when the middle Ordovician and the middle-upper Carboniferous are considered as rock sequences favourable to oil generation.

Cambrian system are found at the southeast margin of Ordos basin, which distributed from Lishi in Shanxi province to Hancheng in Shaanxi province. From bottom to top, they are as follows:Lower Cambrian Mantou F. (∈1m);Middle Cambrian Maozhuang F. (∈2m);Xuzhuang F. (∈2x);Zhangxia F. (∈2z);Upper Cambrian Gushan F. (∈3g);Changshan F. (∈3c);Fengshan F. (∈3f)Various trilobites are found, totalling 23 families and 56 genera. Type section of the area is in Xiweikou of Hejin,Shanxi province.Discovery of Redlichia chinensis in 1964 in Hancheng proved not at all absence of Mantou sediments in this area. Take the Maozhuang F. as the beginning of the middle Cambrian, the strata are characterized by abundant Ptychopariidae. The Shabtungaspis aclis, among the 6 important genera,is the most widespread one.The Xuzhuang F. contains 4 fossil zones, such as Kochaspis hsuchuangensis,Sunaspis laevis,Porigraulos abrota and Honanaspis. The Zhangxia F. shows the climax of development of trilobites, which comprises 50% of the total amount of the genera found in Cambrian system in the area. The Gushan F. is considered as a marker bed for distinguishing the middle from the upper series, due to the stability in trilobite groups, lithology and thickness.Remarkably rare trilobites are found both in the Changshan and Fengshan Formations. Moreover, the top of the latter is characterized by Calvinella."Huoshan sandstones" to the south of lat. 36 N. correspond to the base of the Mantou F.,but to the north of it,most of them match the Maozhuang F. In Zhongyang region, they can be traced up to the base of the Xuzhuang F.,while they were completely missed along Sanchuan river. It is rational to place the boundary of the Cambrian and Ordovician in between earlier Ordovician dolomitic limestones with cherty bands (containing Aotiaspis cf. karaipsis) and Fengshan dolomitic limestones (containing Calvinella).

It is a specious argument that subsurface fluid moves from higher to lower pressure region. To clearify this confused idea, wide discussion is made in this article refering to this problem appeared recently in publications. According to Hubbert's theory on the fluid force potential and field intensity,it is,therefore, described that only fluid potential can be considered as criterion for determining direction and limitation of subsurface fluids instead of pore pressure. In order to show the regime of oil droplets and gas bubbles under hydrostatic or hydrodynamic forces, resultant force relation is derived and resolution is made according to net buoyancy and apparent water force field intensity. Application of Darcy's law to fluid migration is also mentioned. Equations describing ralation between water head and inclined oil-water interface elevation differences as well as the critical (maximum)height of oil column retained by capillary and hydrodynamic pressure are given and explained.

Steroids, terpanes, porphyrins and perylenes etc. from source rocks and crude oil of Lower Tertiary (Eocene)in Jianghan basin are analyzed by means of IR,UV,UVF and GC-MS etc. Characteristics of source rocks and crude oil as well as sedimentary environment, maturity of source materials, oil migration and types of organic matters of the basin are discussed. According to the study of biological mark compounds and systematic molecular parameters, the authors suggest that:(1) The oil source of the Qianjiang Formation is different from that of the Xingouzui Formation;(2) Though the buried depth of Xingouzui reservoir is shallow,it has a high maturity;(3) Oil-generating threshold in the Qianjiang Formation is about 1900m;(4) The presence of gammacerane is typical of the continental organic source material.

In China, the spherical intrusive bodies are wide distributed and have obvious influences on the evolution processes of organic matters in some sedimentary basins.Adopting such a physical model as the"cooling of spherical body in infinite solid medium",and taking the Fourier's heat-conduct law as a basic hypothesis, the heat-conduct equation for heat-releasing process after magma crystallization and its solution have been obtained by the author. On this basis, the temperature distribution equation of coexistent bodies of magma and igneous rock have also been discussed. If the symbol αc shows the residual ratio of available kerogen at any point P in surrounding sedimentary rocks,α0 is that of kerogen which is far from intrusive body and have not been influenced by magmatic heat, then the ratio η=αc0=exp[-K0(θ—tc)]may indicate the extent of influence of magmatic heat on the evolution of kerogen. Here,K0 is the facter of reaction rate depended on Arrhenius formula, and θ—tc=θ—θ0 is the magmatism index (MI).The geochemical data collected show that the method for evaluating the influence on kerogen proposed in this study is helpful to quantitative prediction of thermal evolution of organic matters.

Several unconformities are found within Tertiary fault basins in East China, forming various kinds of litho-stratigraphic traps in combination with various sand bodies developed along the unconformities. These traps are both obviously related to unconformities and controlled by various kinds of sand bodies. The utilization of seismic survey is well known for determining overlap and denudation surface. Therefore, after describing the geological setting of the formation of these litho-stratigraphic traps, emphasis is placed in this article on the geological properties of some main kinds of sand bodies, such as alluvial cones and subaqueous fans, lacustrine turbidites, deltic and subaqueous channel sands. Besides, large amount of seismic exploration examples are used to show their relative properties of seismic reflection. It is suggested that these sand bodies can be identified by recognizing the seismic reflection features so as to discover various kinds of subtle pools.

It is proved by geophysical stuty that the Meso-Cenozoic sediments up to 10000m laied down on the floor of Zhujiangkou basin, which has undergone three stages of development (the fault-sinking stage,fault-downwarping stage and downwarp-subsiding stage),and finally formed a single unified basin.7 boreholes sitting at the northern margin of the basin under study has revealed that the thickness of overlapped upper Tertiary rocks is up to several hundreds meters. They may be underlain by lower Tertiary rocks of 4000m,perhaps with upper Cretaceous rocks included, though these still have not been intersected yet.The basement of the basin is actually continuing from continental margin of Guangtong province, and some small continental basins developed on the main land during Cretaceous and Tertiary times may closely related with Zhujiangkou basin. The later Cretaeeous,Paleocene,Eocene and Oligocene continental rocks in these small basins are quite successive. Within them, some marine intercalations(30—160m)are found, which contain Dinoflagellates,Foraminifera,Gastropoda,Ostracoda,Pelecypoda and Anthozoa as well as stromatolites, layered gypsum,Siphonales limestones, pellet Iimestonos and algal limestones indicating an environment of intertidal zone of ingression of Zhujiangkou basin. Therefore, marine sediments must be more widespread across the Zhujiangkou basin. Obviously,it is quite significant for assessing oil and gas potential of the present basin.

Carboniferous system of east Sichuan are dominantly a suit of intertidalsupratidal dolomites, breccia dolomites intercalated with limestones. They had locally developed into porous zones due to pre-Permian erosion. In recent years, several gas fields were found there, but failures often appeared in exploration. The author suggests that the key point of gas enrichment depend upon reserve and trap conditions, the frequent movements of the earth crust and the abundant rifts there played an important role in controlling the migration and accumulation of gas. It is believed that various traps formed at two sides of wide synclines which are interrupted by upthrow faults of related high anticlines are the most potential parts for gas enrichment, and Chixi and Mennan fault-traps are favourable ones.

Huahai-Jinta basin lies in Gansu province, occupying an area of 9688km2,and filled with sedimentary rocks of about 5000m thick. The lower Paleozoic basement was overlain mainly by Jurassic,Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The source rocks there have quite abundant organic matters, the maximum thickness is 972m,these rocks have a stable reductive environment and good conditions for oil generation. The threshold depth of oil generation is about 1800m. Some indexes of oil generation is comparable with that of western Jiuquan basin and Songliao basin, the geothermal gradient is similar to that of other basins in the western part of China. Conditions for oil reservation is good and a lot of oil showings are found.Huahai-Jinta basin is really a oil prospect one. It is neccessary to find out various kind of oil traps, pay attention to complex zones of oil accumulation as well as the distributing sequences of oil pools.A tentative prevision for favorable sections of the basin is made by the author in this study.
