The main idea of studying the geological properties of natural gas in China is that to start from basin analysis, take thermal effect as fundamental principle, and use the view-point of dynamic equilibrium.Based on the theory of the relationship between basin,ther-mality,hydrocarbon,centered on the formation environment and the resources distribution of natural gas, three kinds of interrelated classification such as thermal, structural and oil-gas resources proportional classfications of the basins were proposed in this paper.Natural gas in China is mainly come from sets of immature sequences,coal-bearing formations, carbonate rook series and lacustrine clastic rooks, and belongs to five genetic types named as biogenic gas,biogenic-thermal catalytic gas, sapropelic gas, humic gas and deep sourced gas.The geological conditions to form big-and medium-size gas fields are:1.certain gas-generating capacity;2.conventional reservoir of considerable thickness;3.late gas-generating stage and pool-forming stage;4.the development of paleo-uplift and paleo-traps;5.favourable regional caprocks;6.faults and unconformities as passage ways forgas migration. There are mainly four gas-bearing domains in China including humic gas, marine carbonate rock gas, lacustrine sapropelic gas and biogas. They are mainly distribut-ed in four major gas provinces which are arranged in the following order:offshore North-west China,Central China and East China oil and gas provinces. The general policy fornatural gas exploration in China is"to explore large-medinm-and small size gas fieldscontemporaneously and to give consideration to long, medium and short terms planning"

Structural system controls hydrocarbon distribution,of which first-stage structure of huge system controls the extent of oil province;two-stage or even secondary structure de-rived from the first-stage structure controls the distribution of oil fields within the province.Structural system resulting from rotation and shear, shear structural system and their compounding system play a considerably important role in hydrocarbon accumula-tion.Examples were used in this paper.

Four problems on the evaluation and exploration of natural gas resources in China are discussed in this paper.1.Exploration stratagem of matural gas:our development policy is"to explore large-,medium-and small-size gas fields simultanneously, and to give consideraton to long-,medium-and short-term planning".2.Prospecting natural gas in oil-rich provinces:Songliao and Bohai Bay basins are the largest oil-bearing basins in China, and are relatively rich in different types of natural gas resources. Many medium-and small-size gas fields(pools)have been discovered in both basins. There are not only bright prospects, but also favorable conditions for explor-ing natural gas in the oil-rich provinces.Oil and gas can be explored simultaneously with low cost, high efficiency and high profit, and they can be explored and utilized in the near future.3.Resource evaluation and determination of exploration areas in structurally com-plex carbonate area in Southern China:an "overall geologic evaluation"should firstly be made in the area Where the carbonates have been croped out,and then choose some areas for key researches and experiments on exploration methods. The principles for favorable exploration area determination are(1)keeping away from the anticlinorium and focusing on the synclinorium;(2)preserving hydrocarbon better in low thermal regions than in high thermal regions.4.Gas exploration in low-porosity and low-permeability tight formation:we have successful experiences and unsuccessful lessons in exploring tight formation gas.Reason-able caution should be taken in exploration deployment for such gas.

Two independent but interrelated Cenozoic structural systems—extensional structure and strike-slip structure developed in the Liaodongwan-Xialiaohe Basin. The extensional structure was the main structure styled in half graben-half horst assemblage that con-trolled the formation and evolution of the basin. The strike-slip structure was distributed in the east margin of the basin, reconstructed the extentianal structure and consisted of ligh-angle or nearly vertical basement strike-slip faults and verious associated structures including linar graben and horst, echelon folds, volcanic and mudstone diapir structures. The strike-slip structure with a dextral character may be related with activity of Tanlu deep fault since Oligocene.

The Wutong Formation of Upper Devonian is widely distributed in Southern Jiangsu Province and storm deposits developed in many places in this formation. According to the analysis characteristics, the storm deposits are considered to be proximal facies developed in litteral environment. A new kind of mega-ripple marks were found in the storm de-posits and named"tri-ridge ripple markes"which were resulted by interference of storm vortex flow in water bottom. So the authors point out that the tri-ridge ripple marks are one of discriminative feature for storm deposit especially for proximal storm deposits.

Mizhi intra-platform depression developed on the broad shallow water carbonate platform in Ordos epeiric sea during Early Ordovician. The area of the depression is about 70000 km2.It was formd by the combined effect of both the differential subsidence of the platform interior and the rise of sea level. The evolution process can be divided into three periods(lower Majiagou, upper Majiagou and Fengfeng). Each period can be subdivided into three stages. The first stage differential subsidence occurred in the platform interior, and sea level rose;the second stage, intense differential subsidence and evident rise of sea level resulted in formation of Mizhi intra-platform depression;the third stage, differential subsidence weakened gradually, the sea level fell, and the depression was filled. The evolution of Mizhi depression underwent three large-scale transgressive-regressive changes and formed three supercycles and three stratigraphic sequences corresponding respectively to lower Majiagou, upper Majiagou and Fengfeng Formations.Three perfect source-reservoir-cap assemblages were formed from the dark organic-rich micrite at the top of the transgressive limb of each supercycle to the evaporite at the upper part of the regres-sive branch.Mizhi intra-platform depression is a gas-bearing sag because of high organic maturation.Recently, the significant discovery of gas in Fengfeng sequence indicates that intra-platform depression has great potential to accumulate gas.The gas accumulated in porous dolomite reservoirs related closely to palaeokarst.A geological model shows that four types of stratigraphic traps existed in the depression.

Lishu area in southern Songliao Basin is a multi-overlapped fault-depressed basin de-veloped upon the Premesozoic metalmorphic basement during Late Jurassic-Middle Creta-ceous.The total thickness of Mesozoic strata in Shiwu fault-depression is about 10000m.The Wujiazi Formation is an important oil-gas source rock. The Quanto sandstone reser-voir developed in depression stage is the main deep-generated low-reserved reservoir. The distribution and thermal evolution of the source rock and two structural move-ments(late Denglouku and Nenjiang stages)controlled hydrocarbon distribution. The steep slope belt in the north of Shiwu faulted-depression is the principal area for hydro-carbon accumulation. From deep depression area to upwelling area, the present area could be divided into three semi-circle hydrocarbon accumulating belts such as Houwujia-hu gas belt,Xiaowujiazi oil-gas belt,Yangdachengzi thick oil belt.

Marine carbonate rocks in South China cover an area of 200?104 km2.From Upper Sinian to Lower Triassic, the total thickness of source rocks is up to several thousand me-ters with rich organic matter. But preservative condition underwent serious damage as in-tensive tectonic movements took place in Indo-China period. As faults and denuda-tion caused surface water to distroy reservoir, thus favourable preservation region must be the one that has fine covery rocks in vertical and good sealing hydrogeological condition in horizontal. The Middle Triassic-Jurassic,Silurian,Lower Cambrian in the study area are perfect regional covery rocks which may seal gas reservoir with more than 500m high gas column. There are three kinds of preservation area:1.Paloozoic bare zone;2.Meso-Cenozoic covering zone;3.The frontal zone of nappe structure.
